At Buffalo Flats in East London, the leg spin of Warrick Hinkel proved tobe the undoing of Northerns as he helped Border restrict the visitors to163 in the 45 overs allocated. Johann Myburgh (46) and Francois duPlessis (37), who had both settled at crease, played rash shots – and they paid dearly as five players failed to reach double figures.But then disaster struck for Border, as they collapsed to 72 for 5 in 27 overs against the pace attack of Northerns. Dumisa Makalima (32) tried in vain torecover the innings but, with wickets falling around him, he and Borderwere saved further embarrassment when the heavens opened. With nofurther play possible, Northerns won by virtue of Messrs Duckworth andLewis.
